How Can I Maintain My Dental Health When Living with Sjögren’s Disease?

Sjögren's disease can pose several challenges to your oral health. We have some practical tips and effective strategies to maintain a healthy mouth despite this autoimmune disease.

Be Mindful of What You Eat and Drink

In order to combat tooth decay, it's crucial to monitor your sugar intake. A good rule of thumb is to consume sugary foods only during regular meals and not between them.

Avoid sipping carbonated beverages, such as soda, between meals. They can be acidic and promote dental decay. If you do drink beverages, consume them quickly and prefer juices fortified with calcium and fluoride. Always remember to rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

Additionally, you should steer clear of alcohol and caffeine, as these are acidic and can promote caries.

Adopt a Robust Dental Care Routine

Consistent dental care is the backbone of maintaining oral health in Sjögren's disease. Brushing and flossing should be non-negotiable daily habits. When choosing a toothpaste, consider toothpaste for "dry mouth," which typically do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate, which can cause canker sores.

Floss at least once daily to ensure the complete removal of dental plaque. Make it a habit to carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, allowing you to brush after meals and snacks even while at work.

Now, here's an important piece of advice to note: do not brush immediately after consuming acidic food or beverages. Why, you ask? Acidic substances can weaken the enamel, the outer layer of your teeth. Brushing at this time could cause further damage. Wait approximately 30 minutes for the enamel to remineralize and strengthen before brushing. Instead, after an acidic meal or drink, rinse your mouth with plain water or a low-fluoride rinse like ACT before brushing.

Incorporate Fluoride into Your Routine

Depending on your risk of developing caries, you might need to include fluoride in your routine. For those at low-to-moderate risk, an over-the-counter 0.05% sodium fluoride mouth rinse can be used daily before sleep.

However, if you're at high risk, your dentist might prescribe a 1.1% neutral sodium fluoride toothpaste, like Prevident 5000 or SF 5000, to replace your regular toothpaste. Remember to refrain from eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after using these fluoride products.

Make Regular Dental Visits

Last but certainly not least, regular visits to your dentist are paramount. Depending on your risk of developing caries, you might need to schedule visits every 3 months. In some cases, more frequent dental X-rays might also be necessary.

Sjögren's disease might bring its set of challenges, but with the right practices and care, maintaining a healthy mouth is entirely possible.
